Nestled in North Texas just west of Wichita Falls, Archer County is a rural county with a strong ranching heritage. Its county seat, Archer City, is best known as the hometown of novelist Larry McMurtry, author of Lonesome Dove, and still boasts the famous Booked Up bookstore. Other communities include Holliday and Windthorst. The county’s economy revolves around ranching, farming, and small-town commerce. Most housing is traditional single-family homes—brick ranchers, frame houses, and modular homes—with plenty of opportunities for acreage. It is predominantly rural, though Wichita Falls, a mid-sized city, lies only 20 minutes away. Home prices are very affordable, with existing homes often between $120,000 and $200,000. Larger ranch properties and land for building vary but are generally priced lower than more urban Texas counties.
