Despite its name, Houston County is in East Texas, not home to Houston the city. Its seat, Crockett, is one of the oldest towns in Texas (founded 1837). The county has deep roots in timber, farming, and early frontier life. Today, it’s largely rural, with Davy Crockett National Forest offering outdoor recreation. Housing includes historic homes in Crockett, modest brick ranchers, cabins, and rural homesteads. Larger cities nearby include Lufkin (35 miles southeast) and Palestine (30 miles northwest). Prices are affordable: most homes fall $140,000–$240,000, while wooded land sells for $6,000–$12,000 per acre. Buyers are often retirees, hunters, or families seeking space in a quiet forested setting.
