With Matador as its seat, Motley County is one of Texas’s least populated counties. Established in 1876, it has always been ranching territory, with rugged canyons and rolling plains. Today, it remains extremely rural, with only a few hundred residents. Housing is limited to small townhomes in Matador, ranch houses, and mobile homes. Lubbock lies about 90 miles west. Prices are very low: most homes cost $70,000–$120,000, while ranchland averages $1,000–$3,000 per acre, depending on water and road access. Buyers are generally ranchers, hunters, or investors in large tracts.
