Anchored by Aspermont, Stonewall County was established in 1876 and developed through ranching and cotton farming. Today, it is extremely rural, with Aspermont as its only town of note. Housing is limited to modest frame homes, brick ranchers, and ranch estates. Abilene is about 90 miles southeast. Homes are very affordable, often $80,000–$140,000, while farmland averages $1,500–$3,000 per acre. Buyers are generally farmers, ranchers, or hunters looking for inexpensive acreage.
