In West Texas, Upton County is anchored by Rankin (the seat) and McCamey. Established in 1887, it developed through ranching and later oil. Today, it remains extremely rural, with oil activity driving much of its economy. Housing stock is limited—small townhomes, mobile units, and ranch houses dominate. Midland is about 60 miles northeast. Homes are inexpensive, usually $80,000–$150,000, while ranchland sells $1,500–$3,000 per acre. Buyers are generally oilfield workers, ranchers, and hunters.
